Nayarit is one of the leading vacation destinations in Mexico. With its sandy beaches, world-class resorts, and lush cultural setting, it is a prime travel hot spot for anyone looking to get away and get some sun. Located on the Pacific coastline of Mexico, it offers you everything you would want out of a Mexican getaway and more.
How to Reach Nayarit?
The best way of getting to Nayarit is by air. You can typically fly into the Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport, which is north of Puerto Vallarta. If you are in Tijuana or Mexico City, you can fly into Tepic International Airport located an hour away from San Las.
Some of the popular beaches where you can cool your jets include the following:
Destiladeras Beach: Destiladeras Beach is the name given to three miles of the coast towards Punta de Mita. This family-friendly beach has a large parking lot and a welcoming atmosphere that invites you to spread out on the wide shores for a day of playing, swimming, and relaxing.
Los Muertos Sayulita Beach: One of the charming beach towns of Riviera Nayarit is Sayulita, bursting with bright colors and the smell of sizzling fish tacos drifting on the ocean breeze. Just past the main beach in town is the smaller, less crowded Los Muertos Beach. Not to be confused with Los Muertos Beach in Puerto Vallarta, this beach is named for the cemetery with festively decorated graves that you have to walk past to access.
Hidden Beach: From all over the world, travelers arrive in Mexico seeking to experience the famed Riviera Nayarit Hidden Beach at Las Marietas Islands. A crater formed over the years by waves and military testing hides this Riviera Nayarit Hidden Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches to ever be tucked away from the world.
La Lancha: North of the city and tucked away from the resorts and tourist areas is La Lancha, home of some of the best surfing in Mexico. Here, you can lay in the sun and watch the surfers catch the waves. To join in the fun, board rentals are available just across the street, and there’s also a variety of surf schools that will take you and help you ride the waves.
Nuevo Vallarta Beach: The region of Nuevo Vallarta is one of Mexico’s most beautiful beach destinations, lined by endless stretches of one of the most spectacular beaches in Riviera Nayarit. With soft sands and gently rolling surf, the water here is perfect for swimming, kayaking, or paddle boarding without having to fight crashing waves. Because the beach here is so long, it’s easy to access and so spread out that you can enjoy it without ever feeling crowded by other beachgoers.
Weather: The average temperature of Nayarit is always high. The coldest month is February with an average maximum temperature of 26°C. A lot of rain falls in the month of June, July, August, and September. It has dry periods in February, March, April, and May. September is the wet month. This month should be avoided if you are not a big fan of rain. April is the driest month. The warmest month in Nayarit is July with an average maximum temperature of 32°C.
Culture: From your hometown to the remote jungles of the Amazon, every place has its own unique culture and tradition. Traveling to Riviera Nayarit Mexico, you’ll be surrounded by the vast Sierra Madre mountains that reach down into the Pacific Ocean and of course by warm Mexican culture. Mexico is a large and diverse country made up of 32 states. Learning about and experiencing Nayarit culture and traditions will enrich your travels and give you a greater appreciation for this beautiful land.
Best Things to Do Nayarit Mexico
Exploring Puerto Vallarta: Most trips to the Riviera Nayarit begin in Puerto Vallarta. It’s the main city in this part of the Mexican Pacific and anchors all the happening surf towns and sparkling beaches, which runs out to the north. It is a destination in its own right. It’s worth at least a couple of days, particularly if you’re into moody street scenes and urban photography. It is recommended you stay somewhere in the Zona Rosa. It’s an LGBTQ+ nightlife area but also the old part of downtown PV. Cobbled streets filled with bars and coffeehouses and markets abound in the district and there’s plenty to keep the camera a-clicking.
Taking A Day Trip to the Bahia de Banderas: Hitting the beach is unquestionably one of the top things to do in Riviera Nayarit. However, the region has wild, wide, and windy bays with frothing waves and jungles. For something more in the way of a tropical paradise a la the Caribbean, you can head out to the south. It takes around 1.5 hours to drive from Sayulita to the top of the Bahia de Banderas past Puerto Vallarta. Here, the wave-bashed coast is swapped with idyllic coves of azure water. There are muddy paths clambering over the boulders to reach white-sand beaches that you have to see to believe.
Head to La Lancha for Surfing and Chilling: Located on the Bahia de Banderas to the south of Sayulita, it has a distinctly white hue to its sand and uber-clear turquoise seas. That makes it a treat for beach bums, who head here from the nearby resort hotels in Punta Mita and Puerto Vallarta to laze under the sea grapes and top up the tan. La Lancha is also a celebrated surf spot. Wedgy waves come in over a reef and sandbanks just off the coast for the intermediates. There’s also a more relaxed beach break closer to the shore for those just starting out.
Enjoying a Wild “Spa” at Playa de Barro: It’s one of the region’s most remote beaches and is a bit of a challenge to get to. Jungle paths are overgrown with ferns and decaying leaves wiggle down from the main Puerto Vallarta-Tepic highway. Alternatively, there’s an awesome coastal trail through the jungles from San Pancho.
